Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Disease

Marginal eyelid disease is a complex disorder of the eyelid margin including the meibomian oil glands and eyelashes. Chronic infection and inflammation of the eyelid can lead to granulated lids as well as styes and chalazions of the lid margin. Acne Rosacea can also be a contributing factor to obstructed oil glands of the eyelid.

Treatment of Blepharitis can include hot compresses and eyelid scrubs using commercial lid wipes or baby shampoo. Topical and oral antibiotics can also be effective in reducing symptoms of this disease.

Advanced treatments can include mechanical expression of the oil glands or prescription eyelid cleaning sprays.
